Asian Pacific American Heritage
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. It is not only a time
to recognize and celebrate Asian Pacific American contributions and achievements,
but also a time for each of us to share and learn more about this vibrant
and growing part of our community.
Who are Asian Pacific Americans?
Asian Pacific Americans (APA) are a diverse group of people. Their distinct
and dynamic cultures encompass a multitude of different languages, dialects,
traditions, religions and national origins. They include people who trace
their ancestry to China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Hawaii
and Tonga, to name a few. Notable Asian Pacific Americans can be found
in many arenas including the arts, entertainment, government, sports,
business, education, science, and technology.
In Washington, Asian Pacific Americans make up nearly 6% of the total
population. Over the past decade, the Snohomish county APA community grew
by 70%, to an estimated 4.9% of the total county population. These neighbors
come from many different ethnic backgrounds - from Asian Indian to Guamanian.
The largest groups are of Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, and Cambodian
ancestry.
In contrast to popular belief, there are many groups within the Asian
Pacific American community that do not fit the model minority stereotype.
This stereotype holds that all Asian Americans are hard-working, educated,
economically and socially successful members of society. In reality they,
like any other segment of the population, experience high levels of unemployment,
school dropouts, teen pregnancy and even criminal activity. Some may be
illiterate in their native language, as well as in English. We need to
work with these communities, families, and individuals to not only address
their individual mental health, but also work toward creating a community
abundant with caring, healthy relationships.
There are many resources in our community where you can learn more about
Asian Pacific Americans. Some of them are the Snohomish County Asian Pacific
Islander Coalition, the Immigrant and Refugee Forum, and Northwest Asian
Weekly.
And don't forget Compass Health Multicultural Services staff. They are
experts in their areas, and involved in the community. Give them a call,
get to know them, invite them to a brown bag lunch! They are more than
happy to answer any questions you might have: 425-349-7210.
