The Role of Spirituality in Mental Health: Case Examples

Description
We will focuse on specific case examples that demonstrate the intersection of mental health and spirituality. Marcia will present situations where the client introduces spirituality in the mental health setting, as well as situations where the therapist carefully offers a range of spiritual tools to assist and comfort the client, while aiding the therapeutic process. Extreme situations involving spirituality and religion that may block the therapeutic process will also be discussed.

Although this is a follow-up to the workshop offered on January 24th, participants need not have attended Part 1 to attend this workshop. If you did not attend the January workshop, you may find it useful to explore your own relationship to religion and spirituality in your work with clients prior to attending this workshop. Participants will have ample opportunity to raise questions about their own comfort level with spirituality/religion and how it impacts their work.

Goals of this Workshop

Participants will:

  1. Learn to present cases that are either successful or problematical in the realm of the intersection between therapy and religion/spirituality.
  2. Learn tools such as meditation, journal writing, guided visualization to aid and abet the above process.
  3. Learn to identify and treat problematical uses of spirituality/religion in a therapy setting.
