Description
Ron will share the current scientific understanding about the neurochemical basis of addiction, providing the participants with a definition of addiction that transcends physical dependence and which underscores the chronic disease model of addictive disorders. This presentation will also include a discussion of the theories on the etiology of chemical dependency emphasizing addiction as a brain disease; this discussion is intended to challenge the participants' viewpoints on addiction causation and expectations about recovery. Participants will also learn about the signs and symptoms of the acute use of these drugs, chronic use consequences and withdrawal implications. Participants in this workshop will also learn about various treatment interventions for addiction, including recent advances medication-assisted treatment.


Goals of this Workshop

This workshop is intended for mental health professionals and other social service providers working with individuals who struggle with chemical dependency issues. Participants will:

  • learn about the neurochemical basis of addiction
  • learn about the acute effects and chronic use consequences of various illicit drugs
  • learn about various treatment options and the variables affecting outcomes
  • think about how s/he conceptualizes addiction and how that personal concept affects her/his expectations regarding the psychosocial functioning of recovering addicts

About The Presenter
Ron Jackson is the executive director of Evergreen Treatment Services in Seattle and an affiliate professor for the UW's School of Social Work and the National Drug Court Institute. He has more than 30 years experience in the field of chemical dependency and more than 20 years experience as an instructor.

 

CEU Credit
This workshop is approved for 3 CEUs by the Washington Chapter, National Association of Social Workers (NASW) for Licensed Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, and Mental Health Counselors.
