Celebrating 125 Years: County Spotlights Across Northwest Washington

Snohomish County

As part of Compass Health’s 125th anniversary, we’re highlighting each of our counties and the role they play in our story.   

Compass Health began more than a century ago with the opening of The Parkland Lutheran Children’s Home in 1902. In 1922, the home moved to Everett, establishing what would later become our Federal Avenue Campus. Over the years, the organization evolved into the Luther Child Center and later LifeNet Health. In October 1997, Counterpoint, Family Counseling, and LifeNet Health consolidated to form Compass Health, creating the organization that continues to serve Snohomish County today.  

In 2025, Snohomish County is our largest service area, where more than 400 hundred team members support over 7,000 individuals and families each year through outpatient care, crisis services, supportive housing, integrated healthcare, and more.  

As we celebrate 125 years of service, we are proud to reflect on the partnerships, communities, and people who have shaped our journey in Snohomish County and helped build the foundation of our services across Northwest Washington.  

Island County 

Our history in Island County began in 1997 when Island Mental Health joined Skagit Mental Health and North Island Mental Health to form Community Mental Health. In 2003, Community Mental Health merged with Compass Health expanding services to Island, Skagit, and San Juan counties.  

Today, Island County supports over 800 clients with the dedication and expertise of 27 team members across two primary locations. Through clinic-based, community-based, youth, and integrated medical services, teams help connect residents to the care and support they need.  

For more than two decades, Island County has been an important part of the Compass Health story. As we continue to celebrate 125 years of service, we are grateful for our team members, community partners, and residents who continue to help strengthen behavioral health care across our five-county region.  

San Juan County

Our connection to San Juan County began in 2003 when Community Mental Health merged with Compass Health expanding services San Juan, Island, and Skagit county. Since then, San Juan County has played an important role in our mission to delivery community-based behavioral health care to individuals and families across Northwest Washington.  

In San Juan County, Compass Health supports approximately 700 clients with 15 dedicated team members across three island-based locations. While off-island access comes with unique transportation, our team remains committed to ensuring individuals and families can access behavioral healthcare services within their communities. Through outpatient services, crisis response services, substance use disorder services, and more, our teams work to ensure resident can access care close to home.  

Since joining Compass Health in 2003, the San Juan County community has made helped expand access to behavioral health care across the islands. We are grateful for the partnership and community connections that continue to make this work possible.  

Skagit County

Our history in Skagit County began in 1997 when Skagit Mental Health, Island Mental Health, and North Island Mental Health consolidated to form Community Mental Health. In 2003, Community Mental Health consolidated with Compass Health, expanding services to include Skagit, Island, and San Juan counties.  

Today, approximately 65 team members in Skagit Count support more than 1,300 clients each year through our clinic-based services, intensive outpatient programs, and crisis response services delivered across three primary locations. Compass Health also provides supportive housing in Skagit County, helping create stability and a strong foundation of care for our residents.  

As we mark 125 years of service, we are grateful to the Skagit County teams for their shared commitment to providing accessible and responsive care.
