Mental Health Awareness Month: Island County Spotlight Copy
As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re proud to spotlight Island County and the important work happening across this community.
In Island County, Compass Health supports approximately 868 clients annually, with the dedication and expertise of 27 staff working across two primary locations. Island County is made up of Camano Island and Whidbey Island. These islands are not connected to each other; Camano is accessed via bridge in northwest Snohomish County, and Whidbey is accessed by bridge in west Skagit County, or by ferry out of Mukilteo. Serving a community accessed by bridge or ferry means care often requires additional coordination, flexibility, and shared problem‑solving. Through clinic based, community based, youth, and integrated medical services, Island County teams remain closely connected to the people they serve, ensuring access to care despite geographic and transportation challenges.
Let’s take a closer look at the Compass Health sites serving Island County and the services offered at each location.
Coupeville
The Coupeville site serves as the home base for Compass Health’s WISe (Wraparound with Intensive Services) team in Island County. From this location, teams provide intensive, community‑based support for youth with complex behavioral health needs and their families. WISe services include care coordination, therapy, psychiatric support, and crisis response, allowing teams to address both behavioral and medical needs as part of an integrated, whole person approach. Care is often delivered directly in homes, schools, and community settings, which is especially important in an island community where travel and access can require additional planning.
Oak Harbor
The Oak Harbor site serves as a central hub for Compass Health services in Island County, offering adult outpatient services, Adult Intensive Mental Health Services (AIMS/IOP), child and family outpatient services, Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT) and Designated Crisis Responder (DCR) services, along with integrated Medical Services. From this location, teams provide behavioral health care, medical support, crisis response, and care coordination, frequently working across disciplines and sites to ensure continuity of care. Staff regularly adjust scheduling and share resources to help individuals and families stay connected to services while navigating bridge and ferry access.
Housing
In addition to clinical and crisis services, Compass Health supports housing in Island County. Stable housing is a critical part of behavioral health recovery, and having a local option on Whidbey Island helps individuals stay connected to their community and the services they rely on.
Over the past year, Compass Health’s work in Island County has continued to grow through the steady efforts of teams supporting care across both sites. By delivering outpatient, youth, and medical services in a setting shaped by island geography, staff routinely adjust how care is coordinated to account for bridge and ferry access, travel timing, and shared resources. This flexibility allows teams to maintain access to services and continuity of care, while staying responsive to the unique needs of individuals and families living across Whidbey Island.
What makes Island County unique is the adaptability and teamwork required to serve a more remote community. Across clinical, youth, medical, and operational roles, staff work closely together to navigate distance, logistics, and access while remaining deeply connected to the communities they serve.
Together, these teams and locations reflect the heart of our work in Island County. Thank you to our staff for the care, commitment, and collaboration you bring to this community each and every day.
