July Is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
Formally recognized in June 2008, Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month was created to bring awareness to the unique struggles that underrepresented groups face when it comes to mental illness in the US.
Bebe Moore Campbell was an author, teacher, and mental health activist who worked hard to bring to light the struggles the Black community and underrepresented communities have when it comes to mental needs.
To continue the work of Bebe Moore Campbell Mental Health America has designated this year’s Minority Mental Health Awareness Month campaign as Strength in Communities. It will explore three areas of mental health in underrepresented communities: community care, self-directed care, and cultural care, and why these types of care are valid and valuable choices people can make for their mental health.
